Dr. Roger Teel, Sr. Minister at Mile Hi Church in Denver, recently stated at one of our services that “Your greatest guru is your HEART.” I do believe in the truth of this statement! Remember the movie, Moulin Rouge? I love the quote, “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to love and to be loved in return.” This means that we are called upon to love others AND ourselves. We must release and let go of what we’ve been carrying around: our judgments, our condemnation of ourselves or others, our attack thoughts, our numbing out to our feelings.
Relationships are our teachers. We are BEINGS OF LOVE, and as such, we yearn for interaction and connection with other BEINGS. Our deepest human needs are to be SEEN, to have IDENTITY, and to be LOVED. One of the greatest gifts of relationship is that we have a WITNESS for our life. We are not invisible or forgotten.
In Relationship, we have limitless opportunity to expand into our True Self, and to witness the other doing the same. When we can be in relationship with others coming from our True Self, we have enriched, successful relationships. From our True Self, the EGO is edged out and cannot play defense or be reactive.
We are drawn into relationships where the most healing or learning can occur. Each and every relationship shows up in our lives for a reason. If we focus on our part in the relationship, we will begin to see the lessons. If we ignore the lessons in front of us, or deny them, we will continue to attract similar situations and relationships until we “see the light”. Be open to receiving the “gifts” from each and every relationship you encounter.
Draw your attention to the goodness of others. Appreciate their accomplishments and opportunities, rather than focusing on their failures and missed opportunities. Admire and appreciate their qualities, their essence, their True Self. Thank them for the learning opportunities they have given you.
Then draw your attention to yourself. Where have you been wounded in the past? Just know that at the core of your being, your heart is still perfect, whole and complete. It’s only your EGO (False Self) that has been injured, and it’s easy to shine the light of love on every past hurt or situation. Your journey is about awakening to the Truth of who you are and why you are here. You’re here to be a beacon of the love that’s within you.
Here’s a favorite quote from Mother Theresa: We can do no great things. Only small things with great love.
